Rangers market values: Cantwell drops as squad market value falls to €100.2m
It’s been a hugely disappointing season for Rangers after a summer filled with optimism from supporters desperate for their side to mount a title challenge. Celtic won all three domestic trophies under Ange Postecoglou last season but Michael Beale promised a rebuild with nine new faces arriving in the summer transfer window and some important players departing.
Rangers invested €16.3 million in new signings but despite initial excitement, Jack Butland has been the only indisputable success. In hindsight, Rangers’ transfer business looks abysmal with big arrivals Cyriel Dessers, Sam Lammers and Jose Cifuentes failing to impress. Rangers’ total market value has fallen by €4.35m in our latest update with the aforementioned trio accounting for dropping by €3m collectively. Beale, ultimately, paid the price for his poor recruitment with former Monaco manager Philippe Clement replacing the Englishman. The Belgian showed initial promise but two poor results have Rangers trailing Celtic by eight points in the title race and facing a showdown against Real Betis to qualify for the knockout stages of the Europa League. We’ve analysed the Rangers players with the biggest increases and decreases in our latest market value update with their overall squad value dropping to €100.2m.
Rangers' top five market value increases
Jack Butland rejected a contract offer at Manchester United to join Rangers to play regularly after several seasons of warming the bench. Butland didn’t play a single minute across the last two seasons at Manchester United and Crystal Palace but he’s started every game for Rangers, recording 11 clean sheets in 25 games. Butland has been Rangers’ standout performer and that’s reflected by his market value rising by €1m.
Abdallah Sima was Rangers’ only loan signing of the summer and it’s proven good business. The versatile forward’s value has increased by €1m to €7m after scoring nine goals in 24 appearances. Sima also embarked on a remarkable run of scoring seven goals in seven games and he carries a major threat from the left wing. The Senegal international’s highest value was €11m in 2021 while Sparta Prague and Brighton will be keeping tabs on their loan player’s development.
Ross McCausland received his first-ever marked valuation of €1m in the latest update after enjoying a breakthrough season. The talented winger made his professional debut in 2021 but he’s established himself as a first-team player under Clement and made his first start against Livingston in November. McCausland scored his first Rangers goal in the Europa League just days after signing a new contract and he also received his maiden Northern Ireland cap this season.
Nicolas Raskin’s market value has increased slightly by €500k to become Rangers’ joint most valuable player with Todd Cantwell at €8m. Raskin has experienced some injury problems this season but his absence is extremely noticeable and he’s arguably Rangers’ best player. Rangers signed the Belgian Under-21 international for a bargain price of €1.5m in January from Standard Liege and he will net a significant profit when he’s sold.
Danilo was Rangers’ marquee signing this summer, arriving from Feyenoord for €6.3m. The Brazilian striker has endured an indifferent start to life at Ibrox but he’s shown promise and his value has increased by €500k. Danilo has provided 11 goal contributions in 19 appearances but injury disrupted his integration at Rangers and he’ll be expected to show his true value in the coming months.
Rangers' top five market value decreases
Jose Cifuentes’ arrival was viewed as a major coup by Rangers but he’s not delivered on his reputation. Beale claimed that Cifuentes would take Rangers to ‘the next level’ but he’s underwhelmed massively and that’s reflected in his market value falling by €1.5m - more than any other player. The Colombian international was rated highly in the MLS and whilst he must be afforded some leeway as he acclimates to a new country, Cifuentes must improve to secure a place in Rangers’ best eleven.
Todd Cantwell was a revelation following his arrival from Norwich in January, quickly becoming a fans’ favourite after 11 goal contributions in 20 appearances. The attacking midfielder, however, has struggled badly this campaign with just five goal contributions in 18 games and he’s out of favour with new boss Clement. Cantwell was withdrawn for tactical reasons at half-time in the League Cup semi-final against Hearts before being hauled off after just 35 minutes in the Europa League against Aris Limassol.
Borna Barisic’s market value has decreased by €1m due to his age but it remains high at €5.5m. Despite receiving regular criticism from Rangers fans, Barisic regularly features for Croatia and he has been favoured over Ridvan Yilmaz by Beale and Clement. While defensively suspect and guilty of being negative in possession, Barisic possesses excellent delivery on his left foot and he’s provided four assists this season.
John Lundstram’s market value has dropped to €6.5m despite featuring regularly for Rangers this season. The English midfielder is approaching his 30th birthday and he’s free to talk to other clubs from January with his contract to expire next summer. Lundstram’s market value hit its peak of €10 in 2020 when he was at Sheffield United. Lundstram was instrumental in Rangers’ journey to the Europa League final in 2022 and he’s been one of their better performers this season.
Cyriel Dessers was signed to score the goals to push Rangers to glory but he has endured a miserable start to life at Ibrox. The 28-year-old has scored six goals in 22 appearances but more was expected from the €5m signing and his value has dropped by €1m in the latest update. With Rangers chasing a goal in recent draws over Aris and Aberdeen, Dessers remained an unused substitute which sums up his current predicament.
Rangers' current total market value €61.2m lower than record high in 2022
Rangers’ total market value has fluctuated majorly over the last five seasons with on-field performance and player departures being major factors. During the 2019/20 season, Rangers’ total valuation stood at €55.35m but it grew substantially to a record-high of €161.38m in 2021/22. The exponential growth was a result of several Rangers players growing in value during two seasons when they won the league title and reached the Europa League final in May 2022.
Ryan Kent was Rangers’ highest valued player (€17.5m) during the 2021/22 season, with Amad Diallo at €15m, Alfredo Morelos at €13m plus Calvin Bassey and Joe Aribo at €10m. Aribo, Bassey and Diallo all departed ahead of the 2022/23 campaign and that was significant to the drop in valuation by €44.65m - while Morelos and Kent’s values dropped considerably.
Rangers’ total market value has dropped in the recent update with several players underperforming and others getting older. Cifuentes arrived amid much fanfare but he’s been disappointing while Todd Cantwell - excellent after his arrival in January from Norwich - has failed to replicate his performance levels. Rangers made eight permanent signings last summer but only Butland and Danilo have increased in value in the recent update, while several players have dropped significantly.
